Vista 64 question

Thanks for everyone's help on my 4 GB/8GB ram question.

I have a new desktop that is compatible with Vista 64 bit. That would give
me the use of the 8 GB of ram.

Two questions:

(1) Where can I get the drivers that would be needed for my computer to run
the 64 bit version? I haven't started the machine yet, but would run it a
while with the 32 bit version. I assume I would download the drivers, then
install the 64 bit version.

(2) Is it correct that any programs or hardware compatible with the 32 bit
version will run with the 64 bit version, even though there will not
necessarily be any improvement in performance?

Yur computer must be "fitted out" with a 64 bit processor.

Keep in mind that 64 bit OS ONLY utilizes ceritified/signed drivers - it is
not compatible with all 32 bit drivers/applications applications must be
designed specifically for 64 bit OS to atake advantage of capabilities.

Would that apply to hardware - printers, etc. - if they have specific 32 bit
drivers would that be a problem?

YES!!!! You'll have all kind of problems you can imagine (and the ones you
can't imagine too).

Printers, scanners, bluetooth, soundcard, modem ... u name it and you WILL
have problems. True that most recent hardware will have update x64 bit
versions of their drivers, but if your equipment or periferals are 2+ years
older, they're gonna be hard to find.
Been through all that. Even had to try to "hack" a driver and make Vista
"think" it was designed for 64 bits.
If I were you, I'd try dualboot x32 and x64 bits just in case you won't find
workarounds for your most important devices.

I wanted to be able to utilize 8G of ram, and the primary reason is to
enhance video editing. I started checking some manufacturers' websites re:
compatibility. I'm using Premiere Pro 1.5, and Adobe says that even the
NEWER version (CS3) will only utilize 3G of ram since it's not designed for
a 64 bit environment (even though it will work with Vista 64 bit).

So the whole thing is sort of ironic - unless I'm willing to invest $$ in
more sophisticated video editing software (or switch to a Mac, which I
probably would have done if I were that serious about video editing), there
doesn't seem to be a point in doing this, does there???

Did the desktop come with a driver CD/DVD? If it did it probably has 64 bit
drivers on it. All the current motherboards I've seen in the last six months
had 64 bit drivers on the CD. If not then go to the chipset manufacturers
web site and download the chipset driver, SATA/RAID driver, and NIC driver.
You probably won't need them to install Vista but it's good to have them
handy just in case. Insert the Vista x64 DVD, boot the computer, and start
the install. All the x64 installs I've done lately have enough drivers
included to get Vista up and running. Once it's running install the
motherboard and NIC drivers. You can then download whatever else you need.
