Virus?

Dear Windowers,

My computer is behaving strange lately.

1. First of all, my taskbar keeps changing, without my consent. For example,
the language toolbar keeps coming bar, without me wanting it to. Also the
outlining of the different toolbars changes all the time.
I have locked the toolbar, but it keeps changing.

2. My computer is running very slow lately. I have tried to defrag it, bit
it didn’t help. I used Avast virusscanner, to check it, but nothing showed up.

Can anyone help me out.

1. To determine the virus/malware status of your computer, go through
these general malware removal steps systematically:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with either Sysclean or David Lipman's Multi_AV
(instructions at link above).

2. Look in Event Viewer for clues:
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

3. If the computer is virus/malware-free, do clean-boot troubleshooting:

Clean-boot advanced troubleshooting in Windows XP -

and How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP -

4. Have you done proper computer maintenance? See:

Slow or Sluggish Computer:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm
http://aumha.org/a/health.htm - Take Out the Trash

5. This could also be caused by hardware problems. Make sure your hard
drive is using the correct data transfer mode. See MVP Hans-Georg
Michna's information about that here:

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).
