Virus question

Since I got the W32 worm blaster virus, I was wondering
how I got the virus. How did that thing get spread?
What did I do to get this virus? Does opening
unsolicited mail have to do with it?

I can't say exactly where you got it but, it is not a good idea to open any
mail that you don't know where it came from. Don't use the preview pain in
your mail account or the malware can be installed as soon as you loge into
your mail, without opening it yourself. I found this out the hard way!

This Virus spreads on the internet... it exploits a known valnerability in
windows systems (for which there is now a patch from MS)

It gets on to your system because:
1) Your system is not adequately protected by decent Firewall
(www.outpost.com for the best one I know of)
2) Your system has not been updated with a patch from Microsoft that fixes
this issue.

Do the above steps plus remove the virus with the free tool from
www.sarc.com and you should be okay.
As to what it has done to your computer... no idea.

Blaster is a hunter, it finds you whenever you are on the
Internet, all means of connection are vulnerable. It has
nothing to do with email, it just pings all IP addresses and
infects any that answer if they have not been patched. A
firewall blocks the ping

It doesn't come via E-mail. You got it because you neither had a
firewall nor had installed the Microsoft patch that removes the
vulnerability it exploits.

If you haven't done either (preferably both) of those, you almost
certainly will get it again.

Greetings --

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
installed the KB824146 Hotfix, without having first installed an
antivirus application with current virus definition files, and before
enabling a firewall, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.
