Virus Protection deleted Notepad

My virus protection detected a virus in Notepad.exe. I couldn't clean it so it ended up deleting notepad.exe. How do I re-install it? I am running Windows XP home which came on pre-loaded on my Sony Vaio. Can someone point me in the right directions?

1. Right-click on your Desktop and select NEW > SHORTCUT
2. Type in: NOTEPAD.EXE , and click Next.
3. Type in a name for the shortcut, such as "NotePad"
4. Click "Finish".
5. A shortcut to your NotePad program will appear on your desktop.

If the above does not work:

EditPad Lite is an excellent Notepad replacement.
It's a lightweight text editor, but certainly not as bare
as the standard Notepad that comes with Windows.

Sony Vaio has Windows installation files in the folder Windows/I386. Search
this folder for notepad.ex_ {the compressed notepad.exe}. Use expand.exe
{ in the same folder } to expand the file to the Windows/System32 folder.
Note: for some reason, my Sony Vaio has notepad.exe also in the Windows
folder. You may need to also place a copy there. However, the path to
notepad.exe in All Programs is to the system32 folder.
