Virus in MS IE Security Patch for October

Recieved an MS security email requiring that I update IE
6.0 under Windows XP Prof. with October Patch. My anti
virus software gave this message;

virus detected in attachment, has been deleted.

Microsoft never sends email with attachments for security updates. This, as
you found out, is a virus. There are a few different ones for security
updates going around. Never run any attachments claiming to be from MS, as
they are not cause ms doesn't send attachments. Get your updates from
windows update website.

There are dozens of these going the rounds, having been littering thousands
of address books around the world. Microsoft never send such e-mails. Just
delete them as soon as possible.

That is not from Microsoft. It is a very plausible attempt by a vandal
to get you to run the 'patch', which is a virus (that then sends out
the same e-mail to everyone you know). Delete it. Microsoft *never*
sends out such things by e-mail - nor will any reputable company. Also
beware of mail purporting to come from places like Banks/eBay/PayPal
wanting you to send in a check of your credit card details - they are
hoaxes too, trying to capture your id for fraud.

I treat all unsolicited email as likely assaults on my
computer. I include e-cards and any email that "warns" me
about porn on my computer and says "click here to clean your
computer."

I don't click on blind links and I treat all spam as though
it comes from the DNC.
