I've apparently gotten some kind of virus. I was going to try to restore to
an earliertime before I got whatever it is, but when I go to restore, it
tells me AI have no restore points. I know this is not true because the files
(uninstall) that contain the data are still there. IUs there a way to
reinstall the system restore component and quickly do a restore to get the
virus out/

Is there any other sign of a virus?

I hope you don't think using a System Restore point will *fix* a virus
infection or malware infestation...

The most authoritative and complete information I know of about the System
Restore functionality:
http://bertk.mvps.org/
(Menu system at the top of the page to navigate.)

However - it may be a lost cause. You would be best served by restoring
from *your* actual backups - and system state - if you have been doing them
as you should. ;-)

Check the size of %systemdrive%\System Volume Information ( you might need
to edit the ACLs to get read access ). That is where the restore points are
stored. If it's empty, then you've got no restore points.

Secondly, system restore can't protect you from viruses. A virus can easily
infiltrate a restore point and smash that idea.

Rather get an antivirus and scan your computer.
