Virus damage----

R

Richard Oliver

My son took his computer to a computer shop and was told that "a virus"
had killed his machine and monitor.
Just how much irreparable damage is possible from a virus?.
I have asked him to get a name for the virus from these people.
Kind regards,Richard

New one on me! Get that name. And tell them about the swamp land that
you have for sale.

Mike.....

I remember a hoax, back in dos6.2 days, that a virus was running
around that caused your cdrom to overspeed spin, causing it to shatter
the cd and send shrapnel everywhere, killing the user.

It was a short lived hoax,

later, and Merry Christmas Everyone!!!!!

They are trying to play on your son's inexperience to sell him a
new computer. Try somewhere else - and also put in a complaint to
your consumer affairs people if you feel so inclined.

Also you might post the symptoms - people here may be able to
help.

I don't know of any other way to put this, but... they are full of shit.

A virus only has the same power that any other software has. It can delete
data, overwrite data, create data etc. It cannot physically break hardware.

How about .... " I question their integrity?"

Seems that someone is taking advantage of your son's ignorance.

There exists no virus that would totally "kill" a machine and the monitor. Yet
there exist a few viruses that may trash the flash BIOS when triggering, but
these viruses are now quite rare, practically extinct, and function only under
Win 9x and ME.

Ignorance costs!

What kind of virus?
What did they actually say?
Did they actually say it killed the monitor? Or the video card, or drivers?
CIH virus, and its variations, can kill the BIOS: leaving the computer dead.
How old is the computer, what processor, how much RAM?
Sometimes replacing a computer is the only conscionable thing to suggest,
depending on the prognosis.
