Virus...Can't log in, reboots

Still having problems....I can not log in. I get to where my password is
required, enter it and the computer reboots. I have the XP UPGRADE disk only
and not the full XP program. Upgraded about 6 months ago from ME, and still
that disk doesn't work. I go to "safe mood", try the options there and still
nothing works. I need to go to a recovery stage, but the computer won't boot
up the CD. I clearly have a virus, but don't know how to get rid of it. Is
there something else I can do to get rid of the virus? Something in "safe
mode" that I could be doing differently? Help?!?

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (personal free version)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Dowload the signature files (pattern files) by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt202.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adware with the latest definitions.
3) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) If you are using WinME or WinXP,Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point

Dave. Thanks for your help. The problem is I can't down load anything onto my
computer becuase I can't login. Is there a software I can buy off the shelf
which will help? Is there something I can do in safe mood? If I purchase and
try and install an anti virus will that help? I am frustrated. PLEASE HELP!

It isn't clear that you have a virus. There are other reasons why you
might not be able to log in. The XP Upgrade CD is a full version of XP;
the only difference is that when you install it you must provide proof
that you are eligible to use an upgrade version (an earlier os).
Perhaps you don't have your computer set to boot from CD. You would
change the boot order in the BIOS.

Here is a Knowledge Base link that might help:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313322 - A User Logon Request Is
Rejected Without Any Messages

However, it may be easier for you to take your machine to a good local
computer repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store) and let
them set it right.

Good luck,

Malke
