Virtual PC 2007 - running but not accessible

I have been using Virtual PC for over a week up until earlier today.
Suddenly when I attempt to open it, it I see it briefly appear on the screen
& it is immediately minimised to the taskbar.
If I click on it in the taskbar, it disappears completely from view, but
Task Manager shows it as still running.
I did a System Restore, which made no difference, so I uninstalled &
reinstalled it, but the same thing is still happening.
Can anybody help me please?

What you are seeing is entirely normal. Virtual PC will start back up in
whatever state it was last in when you shut it down - if it was minimized to
the taskbar it will start on the taskbar with the console invisible, if it
was running with the control console on the desktop it will start up with
the console visible.

thx Richard, but why can't I restore it again?
since posting, I've discovered there's an icon in the system tray that
enables me to open my virtual XP, but I used to see the Virtual PC program
running in a separate window on the desktop up until this happened.
I guess it's immaterial, so long as I can still access the program from the
System Tray icon, I'm just at a loss to understand why it suddenly decided to
behave this way after a week of use???

Close VirtualPC down while it is on the desktop and it will reopen on the
desktop. Memory!

The problem is that right-clicking doesn't "show" the console. It just
reappears on the task bar, then if I click on it there, it disappears again.
Nothing appears on the desktop.
I can access options by right-clicking the icon in System Tray, but they all

As I mentiioned earlier, I've done a system restore back to a time when it

helped.

Same thing Richard ... double clicking it in the System Tray brings it to the
taskbar, double clicking it on the taskbar removes it from the taskbar.

Right clicking on it in the taskbar, the maximise option isn't available.
The only available options are Close, Minimise, Close, Move.

I've read the rest of the message trail after this one.

I had the same problem with all the same details as you've indicated above
and in your replies to others.

Do this, make sure VPC isn't running first :

1. Open a command line session.
2. Type in notepad %appdata%\Microsoft\Virtual PC\Options.xml
3. Find the line <visible type="boolean">false</visible>
4. Change "false" to "true"
5. Save and exit
6. Try VPC again.

This worked for me when every other suggestion (all the ones you've gotten
in this thread) didn't.

- Bill

Bill, I felt sure this was going to be the solution, but sadly it hasn't
fixed it :(
I've re-opened the Options.xml document to check that it has saved as true
and as you can see here, it has:

<window>
<console>
<height type="integer">256</height>
<left_position type="integer">4294935296</left_position>
<top_position type="integer">4294935296</top_position>
<visible type="boolean">true</visible>
<width type="integer">367</width>
</console>
but thanks for your contribution Bill, much appreciated

Here's mine:

- <window>
- <console>
<height type="integer">256</height>
<left_position type="integer">102</left_position>
<top_position type="integer">5</top_position>
<visible type="boolean">true</visible>
<width type="integer">367</width>
</console>

As you can see, your left and top positions have gone wonky, both being set
to 4294935296 for some weird reason.

aaaaggghhhh!!! still doesn't work Jane!!!
Here's a full copy of my options.xml ... can you see anything else amiss?

Bill, I felt sure this was going to be the solution, but sadly it hasn't
fixed it :(
I've re-opened the Options.xml document to check that it has saved as true
and as you can see here, it has:

<window>
<console>
<height type="integer">256</height>
<left_position type="integer">4294935296</left_position>
<top_position type="integer">4294935296</top_position>
<visible type="boolean">true</visible>
<width type="integer">367</width>
</console>
but thanks for your contribution Bill, much appreciated

I was about to note that the positioning arguments (4294935296) were insane
and off the screen, and they are, but I note "Jane C" pointed that out, you
tried it, and it still didn't work.

Amazing.

- Bill

I guess I'm just lucky :(
but the even more amazing thing to me is that it's resisted
uninstalling/reinstalling and system restore.
would there be any registry edits controlling it? or does the .xml file do
all of it?
