Virtual PC 2007 and Vista 64bit?

R

Russell

If I understand correctly I should be able to install WindowsXP-Pro to run as a
Virtual PC (OS) within Vista64, assuming they are full versions and not
upgrades. Would I then be able to run 32bit apps and associated drivers
seamlessly with Vista64 apps?

I use Photoshop professionally and the additional RAM capability of Vista64 is
very tempting. But having to dual-boot to do other things that are not yet 64bit
capable is a pita that's not worth it.

Does this feature mean that (assuming I have the processing power and RAM) I can
"have my cake and eat it too"?

Just trying to understand how Virtual PC 2007 might impact on my OS/hardware
choices.

Thanks :)

in theory, YES.
in real life, no guarantees.
one good thing, there is no pain\or damage in trying.
just a little time.

VPC2007 has just been released.
but be aware not all hardware is supported.
for instance, only usb mouse and keyboard are passed through. not other usb devices.

Are you saying that you want to run PhotoShop within a virtual machine.

Good luck!

No, I want to run Photoshop in a 64bit environment (Vista64) to make better use
of >3gb RAM. The impression I got from reading the 'Virtual PC 2007' promo is
that it can run WinXP within Vista64 to run those apps and hardware that are
not supported by Vista64. That would be great since that's one of the reasons
that foks are reluctant to move to a 64bit OS -> support for legacy hardware
software.

Mike's comment in the previous reply that hardware support is limited seems to
contradict the MS announcement: "Save time and money as Virtual PC allows you to
maintain the compatibility of legacy and custom applications during migration to
new operating systems and increases the efficiency of support, development, and
training staffs." This suggests that anything (hardware/software) now running
in XP will do so using Virtual PC 2007.

I suppose you're going to tell me there's no Santa Claus either :)

I'm running a core2 E6600 w/4 gb Ram so this system should be able to make it
perform as well as it was designed to.

So, you DO want to run PhotoShop from within a virtual machine. PhotoShop is
probably one of the few programs that you may not be able to run in a
virtualized system. It uses just too many resources.

Remember, virtualized hardware is nowhere near as good as accessing hardware
directly from within the host operating system. PhotoShop will likely be a
dog.

As I just said: I want to use Vista64 as my primary OS for use with Photoshop
and any other apps that are Vista 64 friendly. The Virtual PC will be used to
install a virtual Windows XP for doing those things that only XP can do.
Photoshop runs fine on Vista64. I don't know where you're reading that I want to
run Photoshop within a virtual machine?

Anyhoo - I just succeeded in installing XP as a Virtual PC running within
Vista64 and it seems to work fine so far. I do have configuration questions
which I'll post in the microsoft.public.virtualpc ng (which I just discovered).

fwiw it's not quite the 'instant on' experience I had hoped for (XP has to boot
in the VirtualPC window). But it might prove to be good enough for me to take
the Vista64 plunge for my main OS. I'm not jumping yet. Just playing with the
RC2 trial versions that will expire soon and happy I was able to try this while
I still can.

Sorry. I didn't see where you had said that PhotoShop would run under a 64
bit O/S. It sounded, to me, like you wanted to run it under Windows XP
virtual machine.

Yes virtual machines must boot up, just like any operating system does. You
are running a computer within a computer and the second computer must do
it's thing. Once booted up, you can X out of the virtual machine window and
choose to save it's current state. The next time it comes on almost
instantly - much like hibernate.

Like any computer, a virtual machine should be rebooted and shutdown
occasionally - if nothing else, after installing a new program to it. A
reboot/shutdown makes certain that there are no bits waiting to be
reinstalled in the temp folders.

Russell, you might like to consider Virtual Server 2005 instead. I've
been running Vista x64 since November, with 4GB RAM. Im also on the
beta for VPC2007 and VS2005 R2SP1. I've done various comparisons, and
Virtual Server definitely runs faster on x64 than Virtual PC.

A lot depends on waht you're trying to do. The interface to VS2005
isn't great (it's effectively VNC), but it's okay. I have an XP
installation running Visual Studio 6, all as a VPC, and it works well.

I'm not recommending you choose one over the other, but it's probably
worth looking into VS2005.
