I just bought a Compaq 3.2 Ghz computer running Windows Vista Basic. It was
only 349.00 at Fry's. So I figured, why not?
When I first installed several programs, the computer was running really,
really, really slow. Slower, in fact, than my 1.5 Ghz AMD Athlon with the
same amount of memory (1 Gig).
Then I opened up the Virtual Memory panel to see how much was being
allocated by Windows. It was too low. It was only defaulted to 1321, when the
"suggested value" was 1500. So what I did, was follow a forum, and set my MIN
at 1600 and my MAX at 3000. (1X and 3X the 1 Gig of RAM). Now that I've
updated the page file managment manually, the computer is no longer running
at 86% like it had originally out of the box. Now it sits comfortably at 63%,
and everything runs super fast.
You really ought to update the default virtual memory so that it is at LEAST
1X the amount of RAM, and the max is at LEAST 3X the RAM. Then people won't
have to wait a million years for Windows Update installations and other
software suites to install.
System Properties - Advanced - Performance Options - Virtual Memory - Set to
MANUAL and put in the values of 1600 at minimum, and 3X your ram as the max
(if you are running on 1 gig of ram) or if you have 2 gigs of ram than set
your minimum at 3200 and your max at 6000 respectively.
Lesson is that Windows virtual memory needs a fix, hopefully in SP1 when it
comes out for Vista.
