I am getting a message that says that Virtual Memory is low and the system eventually freezes. I tried to allocate more virtual memory but that doesn't seem to be helping. Any suggestion

I am also having problems with my internet access. All sort of icons are appearing on my desktop that are from advertisers. I ran a virus scan and know that I need to run and adware scan but cannot download the software online before the system freezes up. What can I do?
