virtical scroll bar problems

When I click directly on the scroll bar (not the box
contained within) it scrolls more than one frame (about
one and a half frames).

It's really annoying.

Is this the result of a virus or bug?

How can it be fixed?

I'm having the same problem... I think it's related to the latest IE6
update, (KB824145) since I didn't have this problem before.

Sorry, I should have read further on before posting... apparently the
problem is related to the IE6 update. This discussion has more:

Whoever approved this so-called "feature" ought to be
removed from the technical team on the most basic grounds
of "not getting it" as to the process of "browsing".
That's why they call it a "browser". This truly idiotic
change destroys one's ability to quick-scan a document,
and can cause an inadvertant missing of portions of
information without realizing it. Only someone with
approval power who does not understand or *do* much real-
life browsing could have seen this idea as a good one.

I cannot stand it. Netscape may be looking better for the
first time in a long time...

A bug in the Q824145 patch. Microsoft knows about it.
Click immediately under the indicator in the scrollbar or drag the
indicator.

What makes you think it's a "feature"? I'd say it's a bug. Now why they
were messing around with the scroll bar code in the first place, is
another question; certainly shouldn't have anything to do with the
security issue that was supposedly addressed by this patch.

I based my assumption (which may have been wrong) on a
response from a MSFT person in the "Setup" thread. He
nonchalantly replied to someone else by reviewing the
various ways to scroll, incl. the new two-page jump we're
all complaining about, and never mentioning that it was
viewed by MSFT as a problem.

It is tied to (KB824145). MS is aware of the problem.
You can remove the patch with the Add/Remove program applet.
A new patch will be issued.

What is the best way for someone interested in this patch, to know when it
becomes available? I took a quick look around the MS website but haven't
seen anywhere where they even mention the problem, so I'm just wondering if
there is some definitive place on the site where one can periodically check
for notification of the patch release. Thanks.

Are you sure it is Q824145? I have the problem and went to remove the
fix but do not have that installed, I do have 824146 and 824105
though.

I'm quite sure I have the patch 824145 installed, and I started seeing
the problem immediately afterwards just like for everyone, but it's
not showing up on add/remove programs list. Others have said they can
uninstall it, but not me. Could it be non-uninstallable due to a
combination of other patches? Maybe you are in the same boat.

How will we know when the fix arrives? Usually I only apply Critical
patches, so the list of unapplied non-critical patches is pretty long
for me. I assume MSoft considers the scroll bar problem to be
non-critical.

I looked again, and it is on the add/remove page, under "Internet
Explorer Q824145". Do you suppose it's really safe to uninstall this?
For me, using PC Anywhere to access PCs remotely, this new behaviour
is almost completely intolerable.
