I want to view the line numbering in a document I have created without
printing it. How can I do this?

It should be displayed in Print Layout view and Print Preview.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried this and the line numbering does not
show. It will print but can not be viewed.

In that case, the line numbering must be applied outside of Word, by an
add-in or the printer driver. You can check this from File | Page Setup |
Layout: Line Numbers...

Thanks for your persistence. I checked the Page Setup / Layout and line
numbering is selected for the pages that are to be numbered and unselected
for the ones that are not to be numbered. Does this mean it was numbered
originally through the Page Setup and, therefore, cannot be viewed on the
screen? If that is the case, how should I number pages in the future so they
can be viewed?

No, this indicates that line numbering *is* applied by Word, and you should
be able to see the line numbers in Print Layout view and Print Preview. I
can't imagine why you're not seeing them unless the Line Number character
style has been formatted as Hidden or White.
