Viewing Japanese email

Guest

I have someone who receives emails from a Japanese client. When you open
those emails, the text shows as gibberish. I have the MS Mincho font
installed, but that doesn't seem to help. I have also built a Windows XP
Japanese computer with Japanese Microsoft Office Suite.

I have changed the various settings in Outlook for International emails,
fonts, etc.

Anyone have any ideas as to how to get Outlook to view the Japanese email
automatically upon opening?

Is there an easy way to determine if the Japanese messages are correctly
encoded? Is this something that is set at the Server level?

It is usually the sending email client that specifies the encoding. You
can check the received email message from View -> Options -> Internet
Headers. There should be a line containing something like
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="ISO-2022-JP"

If this line is missing or incorrect, then a non-Japanese email client
may not be able to display Japanese text correctly. (Japanese clients
have better recognition for Japanese encoding).
