Why does my document view change automatically from Normal to Print Layout
View after clicking Okay when adding page numbers? Is there a default
setting that can be changed to avoid this? TIA

Hi =?Utf-8?B?bW9udGF1a2xpdGU=?=,

Page numbers are inserted in the header/footer area. This area can only be
viewed in the Print Layout view; it's not visible in Normal view. That's why
the switch, and that's why there's no way to avoid it in Word's user
interface.

A correctly programmed macro should be able to insert a page number into a
header/footer without changing the view. But it's not the kind of macro that
can be recorded. And it would have to be a page number that's a field in the
header/footer range, not one in a textbox (which is probably the kind you're
creating, from the sound of it).
