view office document access history???

Steven

Is there a way I can see a hitory/log of what office
documnets were opened and when. I'm trying to determine if
someone accessed some of my word/excel files while they
were using my computer (win XP Pro, Office 2002) Some
files that I haven't opened in a while showed up in
my "recent documnets" and i want to get more details. I
Looked at the "date accessed" column in win explorer but
just clicking on it updated the date accesses time to
current time.

Thanks,

Steven

You would have to make sure you are using NTFS file system to secure your files or start auditing access to the files
With auditing you can go into event viewer and look at the security tab and read information about who accessed your files or who attempted to. This would only help if your PC has multiple log on accounts or you are on a network with domain accounts
In other words if everybody in your house can use your computer without supplying a UNIQUE username and password you won't be able to "track" or audit who accessed your files.

We are using NTFS but don't have auditing enabled. We are
on a domain but it wouldn't matter because the incident in
question happened on my own machine while looged in as me.
I just need to know when (other than last) local office
documents were opened.

Auditing would still help because it would display every instance that the files were opened, or even if the folder was accessed, not just the last one. Even if someone else got on your box you would still be able to track you and when. You have to be an administrator on the box to set up auditing.

I have admin rights. Would enabling auditing now allow me
to look at the information I need from before the time I
enabled auditing?
