view of attachments in email

I'm using Outlook 2000, which displays attachments to outgoing email either
as an icon or in a pane at the bottom of the screen. I cannot find how to
switch between these views, and when the attachments is displayed as an icon,
I am getting repeated complaints that recipients cannot open the attachment.
Help anybody?

It's not a matter of switching views, it's the Outlook default format. Plain
text or HTML will show it in its own pane or below the subject line. Rich
text will show the attachment as an icon in the body of the email.

Note that rich text format is a format specific to Outlook. Non-Outlook
users will have difficulty seeing or reading this and may or may not receive
attachments.

This helped solve the problem. To sort it I returned to the Outlook main
view, clicked on Tools/options/mail format which gives the choice between
sendimg messages as plain text, HTML or Rich text. i had not realised, nor
did various sources of help that this would be the effect of choosing rich
text for sending messages.
