I found the magic button!! (maybe posted elsewhere)
control panel > display > settings > advanced > overlay ---- check ''theater
mode''
your tv will now play movies.

warning! checking theater mode will decrease monitor performance.

Decrease performance? Hmm....how? I sure can't tell any difference (haven't
benchmarked though, since it's my secondary barebone system).
 
refresh rate and max resolution are lower.

Right...not much of an issue since my 17" monitor can't reach the maximum
values, even the lower ones, anyway.
