I'm running XP Pro SP1 and IE6.
Recently, I have lost the ability to open video links through IE6. Whe
I click any link with an *.avi, *.mpg, *.wmv etc.. file IE goes righ
to the Page Cannot be Displayed message referencing perhaps a DN
error. Flash applications still run no problem. I have run Ad-Aware
Spybot, CWShredder. I flushed my DNS with ipconfig. All my fil
associations seem to be ok. I've tried disabling Norton Interne
Security and XP firewall still to no avail. All TIF files and cookie
deleted. I know there is a solution that doesn't ivolve system restor
or re-installation because I remember solving this problem a few month
ago, I just can't remember how. A solution would be much appreciated
Thanks
(This problem seems to have occurred around the same time I upgraded t
WinAmp 5 although uninstalling will not solve the problem.

Sounds like a File Types problem not a DNS problem.
Can you do a right-click Save As... and then try to open
the saved file? If so, you would have eliminated the DNS
as a problem cause, regardless of whether the file subsequently
would or would not open.

Do you/did you have some other media player installed?
If you only have Windows Media Player installed
you would see all the above extensions and associations
listed for it. E.g. open a command window and enter:

assoc | find /i "wmv"
ftype | find /i "wmv"

When I do that it becomes apparent that I can list
all of the associations for the above extensions
with the following command:

ftype | find /i "wmplayer"

I flushed my DNS with ipconfig.

BTW doing that without changing HOSTS first
may not accomplish very much.
But I still don't think that DNS is going to be your problem.
