Video Game crashes after Windows Update - but I have an Intel Video

I have a Dell Latitude with the Intel Video Card. Three days ago,
Windows Update downloaded two updates. A video game I play on a
regular basis, Galactic Civ 2, generates an Application Error message
immediately after starting. I re-install the Intel Video driver I
downloaded from Dell, and the game runs fine. HOWEVER, If I reboot the
system, and try to start the game, I get the Application Error message
again. To play the game, I have to reinstall the video driver and
reboot the system before hand, every time. Windows "security" update
screwed up my system bigtime, and I disabled the feature. Does anyone
have any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

Do a System Restore to before you installed the update and see what
happens. If all is well, then set your Automatic Updates to download
automatically but *not* to install automatically. Have it set to tell
you when updates are available. Then click on the yellow shield to get
the update install window. Change from the default selection of
"Express" to "Custom". This will allow you to see what updates are
available. Deselect the graphics adapter and, when asked, mark it to
not offer this update again.

There are many applications and drivers that will not work after
XPSP1a.
The three that I know of for sure, after testing, are the scanner on
a HP all
in one, the Motorola Phone tools, and some parts of works 2000. The
hardware manufacturers cannot keep up with the changes that
Microsoft
keeps making to XP. The odd part to all of this is that they all
work
properly on a Xandros boxen. I have invested in 2 copies of XP HOME
and 2 copies of XP PRO. Many more of these changes in windows and
I will have to make some changes. Microsoft is no longer cost
effective
in a home/small office environment. This is just my experience with
too many
variables to affect very many people.
