Video card problems

I'm trying to install an nVidia Geforce 440 AGP 8X 128mb
video card onto a windows XP system. Plug and PLay
detects the card and says "found new hardware, Video
controller (VGA Compatible)". it then says " found new
hardware nVidia Geforce 440 AGP 8X 128mb" then after a
short while the message

"could not install hardware (code 1). Your hardware could
not be installed because: the data is invalid"

Does anyone know what this means or how to solve it?

1) Did you uninstall the old card from device manager???
2) Did you completely remove the old drivers???
3) Are you using the latest drivers????
