Video card andplaying DVD

Hi Guys and Gals
We have a little problem here with vista home and playing dvd's in media
player or media center.
Whenever we try to play a dvd in either player the pc crashes and get the
BSOD.
The error says something like it timed out trying to load the video driver.
It is on my soninlaws PC so I am not sitting by it now.
His PC is = ECS mobo , AMD 2600 CPU , 1 gig memory , Nvidia Gforce FX 5200
video card . Running Vista Home Premium.
Anyone had this experience before.
Thanks

Are these the drivers (96.85) you are using:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_96.85.html

According to the Products Supported page, these are the appropriate
drivers for this rather old card.

Hi Cal Bear
Yes those are the drivers we are using.
Haven't figured it out yet.
He probably needs a bigger PC to run vista hu ?
It should work though.
Thanks

The system seems adequate to run Vista, not screamingly, but it should run.
Have you tried to reinstall the nVidia drivers? Go to their web page and follow
the instructions exactly. (I believe their older drivers require an uninstall
before an install of newer drivers.)

Also, there are two places you can look for clues to what might be causing your
problem: 1) Administrative Tools > Event Viewer, and 2) Control Panel > Problem
Reports and Solutions.

There is the possibility that some software that you have installed is causing
this problem. Did you install anything just before this problem occurred?
Anything from Nero or Roxio perhaps?

I'll have to get back to you on the new install thing.
I will be talking to him tomarrow.
I'll also check out that problems and solutions to.
Thanks again.
Oh ya , do you think it could have something to do with the video codecs
installed?

A video codec pack?
Yes, I have read in here that some video codec packs can cause many problems.

Well we tried the nvivida pure decoder video pack but that didn't help
either.
I would think it has to be the Vista driver , The card works great with XP
and xp drivers.
I think it is time to try ATI card.

NVIDIA 5xxx cards do not the PureVideo functions.
Also the PureVideo decoder is not designed to work in Vista.
How much memory do you have on your 5200 video card? Vista likes 128MB or
better due to its increased graphic capabilities.
What resolution are you using to what type/size/native resolution display?

If you check the nVidia site, you will see that the Pure Video Decoder is NOT
compatible with Vista.

Hi Guys
His Video card is 128 mgb.
I have the nvidia pure video decoder installed on my pc and it has no
complaints.
We installed it on his and it installed ok without problems.(but didn't
help)
I'm trying to talk him into building a bigger PC.
I think his is pretty marginal for vista.
Thanks again.
