I recently bought an NEC DVD writer 3500 AG. It was running fine under
Win98. I could not of course work with files greater than 2 Gb, so I have
installed Win XP Home Edition with SP2. Now, I get errors reading and
writing to the Dvd player. I tried using a Toshiba DVD player, and got the
same problem trying to read DvD's or CD's. In all cases, when trying to copy
files form the disk to the hard-drive, the computer crashes to the BSOD. I
have been working through Tyan, NEC and Win XP help forums. All of them seem
to be coming back to the same issue, and that is a problem with the Chipset
compatibility with Win XP.

I have updated all drivers, including the VIA chipset drivers, and
motherboard BIOS (including resetting the bios), and have tried the WINXP
default IDE drivers. No change in the problem.I have changed cables from 80
pin to 40 pin on the DVD.

Are the KT-133a chipsets compatible with Win XP SP2?

It may not be your chipset drives but how you did your Windows XP install.
Did you do an upgrade from Windows 98? You may have to remove, and
re-install, your chipset drivers and your DVD burning software. You might
still be using the Windwos 98 version of the chipset drivers and DVD burning
software. They are not the same for Windows XP.

Hi,

Have you jumpered the DVD-rom and burner correctly and then connected
correctly?

I would suggest you to use a 40 Pin 80 wired shielded IDE cable.
Jumper both optivcal drives as CS (cale select) then connect the DVD-rom to
master and the burner as slave. Boot into BIOS to ensure DMA mode is enabled
for both Primary and Secondary IDE channels.
Also check the DMA mode for both optical drives in device manager.
Double click IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, click the Secondary IDE channel,
click the Advanced Settings, The Current Transfer Mode for device 0 should
be UDMA mode 4 to 5 and the Current Transfer Mode for device 1 should be UDMA
Mode 2.
If it only show PIO mode and the Transfer MOde greyed out, uninstall the
Secondary IDE controller and then reboot.
windows should find anew hardware and load the correct drivers.
Go to device manager and check the DMA mode again.

Hope it helps.
