VIA AGP driver installation freezes

Hello,

I've bumped on a strange problem. After a long period of failfree operation,
the computer suddenly stopped at the booting sequence. I couldn't get it
working using any hints on the internet. Restoring last good known config
showed up a scrambled screen only.

After that I've installed Windows 2000 three times. Everything goes well
until I try to install the VIA 4in1 driver. The installation freezes and the
reset button is the only resort. During the next boot the bootup sequence
goes into blue windows while loading the AGP driver.
Well, I thought taking the latest driver from the MSI mobo homepage could
help after reinstalling Windows. No luck, the latest driver doesn't help,
now I actually see it the installation freezes when trying to install the
AGP driver. I didn't even try to install the graphic card drivers.

Is it the AGP hw on the mobo that has gone bad or the graphics card itself?
The mobo is MSI KT4V-L v1.1 with KT400 chipset and AMD 2400+ processor
Graphics card is CLUB radeon 9000

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers

Never install the 4-in-1 drivers. The drivers that ship with windows work
fine. You are also chasing a wild goose. Your original problem was most
likely a failing power supply, but you've been concentrating so hard on
video related symptoms that who knows what ELSE is wrong now. It's possible
the symptoms you are seeing could be bad RAM or a bad video card, but a bad
power supply is more likely, and will often mimic symptoms of other
components going bad. -Dave

replace your video card
or skip the 4in1's and use the standard VGA setting that will be the
default, use the system and see if the problem persists. If so check your
voltages and reseat ALL cards and memory modules.

Hi Dave,

the latest attempts are clean installs of Win2k (no SP installed at all),
with only the NIC driver installed. Maybe I can find a old PCI graphics card
somewhere before going for replacing to power supply.

Hi,

standard VGA setting works fine. The problem pops up only when proceeding to
install the AGP driver.
I'll try with reseating all cards and memory modules.

Lars, here's an excellent procedure to follow for OS install on any VIA
chipset m'board:
