VHS to disk?

Anyone know of something to record VHS (through an existing video card) to
disk prior to burning to DVD? We have tried commercial programs like Sonic
and WinProducer but the final product, when transferred to DVD, is poor
quality and grainy. Far from the original, which is Super VHS or Digital
tape.

We think that maybe the commercial programs include too many 'tricks' and
user enhancements while scarificing output quality. It would be nice to
keep our family growing up on quality DVD but are frustrated by the results
and think that there may be something basic (record-only) which may work
better.

The help you need is probably in other groups like:

rec.video.desktop

or

rec.video.production

There are several very knowledgeable people there on video
production quality.

You can run an NG group search for other groups. Another
possible source is

With VirtualDub you can capture to AVI. You will have to convert to MPEG2
afterwards, with Tmpgenc 12a for example.
