Very strange WE problem

My 2K system has just developed a fault where it boots up as normal, and
Windows Explorer opens as usual, but as soon as I select a folder to display
its contents in the right hand pane, WE closes.
There is no entry in the event viewer to explain this.
Has anyone got any ideas on what is causing this and/or how I should
investigate it further?

Fire the machine up in Safe Mode and try to replicate the issue.

Had a simular problem a year or so back the user had turned off the Real
time Virus controls and picked up a Virus (sorry can't remember the name)
then when the weekly scan removed the Virus the problems started. The Virus
had made some chages to the registry. Once I had found the Virus in the log
I was able to look up the information to correct the registry.
