Very slow - explore many handles/threads !

Hi,

my son has a very slow PC since begin of week.
He did clean reinstall of XP-SP1a, no change.

XP-SP1a - 1GB RAM - swap file OK and plenty free space for temp files.

When I look at task manager I see his CPU usage is often 100% or nearby
Explorer uses between 3500 and 4000 handles, and opens approx. 500 threads.
System 500 handles and about 50 threads.

I do not have so many.

Any idea ?
Is it normal that he has so many explorer / system handles ?
How can I approach the problem ?

We have done :
- virus scan ( using Kasperky then Bitdefender) : 2 viruses found, but no
change after cleaning (deleting ) them
- AdAware : nothing
- TrojanHunter 4 : nothing

Also note that while trying Agnitum Outpost Firewall he had the firewall
block 4-5 Netbios calls per SECOND !

He has to be able to browse a local network at school, and share files.

Any help eagerly wanted plz !

TIA

It seems to me that the computer is not clean, antivirus scan or not.
Did you do all scans in Safe Mode after updating the virus definitions?
I would also check to see what is set to start with Windows by using
msconfig. If you need more help, please post back to this thread.

Will try in safe mode.
As for MSConfig, I do not see unwanted/unknown processes in task manager,
nor using process viewer. But will verify.
Thanks for infos.

Yes, please do post back with results. Also, run Task Manager and make a
note of all processes and apps that are running. If you need help in
identifying something, let us know.
