Very slow Excel

B

Berend Botje

Hi,

Recently my excel has trouble opening and closing my workbooks. I
takes about 30 seconds to open or close a workbook. Furthermore, i
takes far too long to save a workbook.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to speed things up?

My workbooks are not large, so that should not be a problem. There ar
VBA scripts in the workbooks, but not much, so that should not be
problem either.

If you have any idea what I can do about this, please respond.

Yours truly,

Hi,

Not too sure myself, but I first think of these areas:
1) Is your PC running as fast as usual with other apps?
So the problem is limited to Excel? Is it, then, only
certain Excel files? or all?
2) Does your excel file reference (query) another server
that might be slow?
3) Have you (or someone) changed the autocalc option?
so that now it calculates a lot of formulas, etc,
automatically where as before it didn't?

Just some food for thought.

A lot of "slow" Excel problems are caused by too many files in your
Windows\Temp folders.

Clear out your Windows\Temp folder.(see notes below)

If using WinXP another Temp folder would be in your

Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp

If you are a Net, the Temp folder could be just about anywhere.

Notes on deleting Windows\Temp files............

Re-boot to make sure there are no Temp files being used by Windows(program
installs, updates etc.) It is easy to forget that when Windows stated "Your
Computer needs to re-boot to complete this update. Re-boot Now?" and you
clicked "No, I'll do it later". The files are stored in Windows\Temp folder.
If you delete them before a re-boot, you can hoop whatever was going on.

After the re-boot, select all files in Windows\Temp folder and delete.

Also in Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp

For more help on speeding up Excel see Charles Williams' site.
