Notebook is a To-cheep-a Satelite 1805, 512 ram. Came with XP home.
Bought XP Pro upgrade, installed about a year ago. Wife complained that
the system started to run very slow a few days ago. Checked and see was
right. Figured virus had gotten us. Even though we are behind a hardware
firewall and several software protection programs. The notbook is on a
network and none of the other computers are effectet.

Micrsoft web help is not much help, suggesting only virus or trojan
infection.

Ran Spybott, Adaware, Perstpatrol, Highjack This, etc. nothing found. Task
manager found the cpu running on average 16%. Occasionally the hard drive
seem to park then continues to runn. TM shows laass.exe to be running
comtinousilly.

Checked the hard drive with a detail SMART check and Spinrite, niether
shows a problem with the hard drive.

At this point I am not sure whaqt to try next. Other than a format and
reinstall, but that should be a last restort.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bill

Lower your activeX security, e.g for unsigned activeX, and go to the online
free virus scan.
Free Online Virus and Security Check:
http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym

It will take a while to start up, but it's worth it, since it's the latest
scan available.
Thanks for your reply. I had expected more from this group.

I am behind a NAT router and have good virus protection. However I
did several scans with programs such as you mention above.

Botton line is, I backed up the C partition and formatted it.
Installed XP Pro fresh and it still runs slow. Seems like it may be a
hardware problem. Running Microsoft memory tester now. Takes around
19 hours for the full test. Should be finished sometime in the early
AM. Sigh....
