Very Interesting: Spybot S&D "Ignore products" default settings in Advanced Mode

D

Dr. Doogie

While looking around in the advanced mode settings (Ver. 1.3) under the
"Ignore products" section, I was surprised to see that four spyware/adware
programs were checked by default. They were:

LSP.new.net
MySearch
new.net
SideStep

What's up with that? They must have an agreement with the writers of SB S&D
to leave them alone.

I don't want this stuff on my computer and this may help shed some light as
to why SB S&D doesn't remove them by default.

Well yes, that's why it does not remove them. When you install the
program you should set the excludes yourself.

It has nothing to do with any defaults - those programs you mention were
not ticked in my list. Perhaps the programs check to see if Spybot is
installed and then modify the exclude list.

Making unsubstantiated statements like "They must have an agreement with
the writers of SB S&D to leave them alone." is not very wise :) I'm sure
that the Spybot team would be pretty peed off to read that!

The products were not on my computer, but I recognized them from cleaning
other people's computers.

The excludes were checked by default when upgrading from ver 1.2 to 1.3

I just finished setting up 30 new machines, fresh XP installs, on which I
installed BS S&D ver 1.3 and the same excludes are checked by default.
Explain that.

For what it is worth, I have recently installed version 1.3 of Spybot and
the four items mentioned were not check-marked by default.

I downloaded ver. 1.3 from download.com. I wonder if that had anything to do
with it?

My guess is it was just a screwup with the default settings. I
just did a 'deselect all' to get rid of them.

A nice thing about the new version is that it works with the
windows scheduler - very easy to set up a daily run of spybot.
On my machine it takes a while, so it's nice to be able to
schedule it to run every night in the small hours.

UNCheck 'em and run Spybot S&D. It will probably find things reating to:
LSP.new.net
MySearch
new.net
SideStep

That is interesting. I just checked mine and found the same thing.

I unchecked them and ran a scan and it did not find any components of the
four suspect entries on my system.

I don't have any theories about why but I think I'll take a shot at asking
Pat Kolla.

Same here. I installed the newest version a few weeks ago. All four
were checked. I unchecked them and ran a scan and nothing found.

I'll be damned. The same four items were checked to be "ignored" on my
computer also. I wonder what is up with this!

FWIW. I've sent a query to the S&D development folks. I'll post back if I
hear anything.

Perhaps you'd better ask SpyBot/Patrick Kolla that question.

A quick Google search brought up the following -

" 'LSP.new.net' - If you use 'google toolbar' you will want that checked"
" 'SideStep' is a downloadable toolbar which searches dozens of sites to
provide consumers with outstanding air, hotel, and rental-car bargains"

Don't know about the other two, but all 4 were checked in mine also.

Greetings --

Curiously enough, my most recent update of Spybot S7D left those
very same items selected to be "ignored." I de-selected them, ran
Spybot, and found nothing. (But then, I really didn't expect to find
anything. I know better than to give any adware/spyware permission to
install itself by blindly agreeing to EULAs on web sites.)

The trouble with most of these toolbars, is that they come with excess
baggage, namely spyware.
