Very Frustrating Situation

I'm having dificulty with IE 6.0, everything was working
fine up until a few weeks ago. the browser would
continually freeze, sometimes it would begin responding
again after a few minutes but usually I would have to
restart my computer. This would happen several times a
day. I've recently updated my java runtime, which seemed
to have helped slightly with java applications, but now
the problem occurs when I exit explorer. Programs stop
responding one after another until I am forced to manually
shut down the computer, thus I have to run scan disk when
I turn my computer back on. Today I ran a virus check out
of frustration and located a virus in my windows temporary
internet files called JAVA_BYTVERIFY.A as well as
JAVA_NEEDY.A, both viruses which change the internet
settings in explorer and allowing malicious users to gain
access to the computer. I removed the infected files and
downloaded the security patch recomended by the antivirus
program. I thought that would have fixed the problem but
it hasn't. Explorer continues to crash very regularly and
I am unable to access any portions of the yahoo geocities
network including my own website and java applications
continually freeze up my computer. I'm considering using a
hammer next. Any assistance would be appreicated
