Vertical text mirage

L

Luis ORTEGA

Powerpoint claims to have a format item tool for changing the direction of
text to vertical, but I can find nothing in any tool set or menu that does
this. Even the weird workarounds with word art shapes only produce crap text
results.
Is this claim a bug in Powerpoint? Where is this vertical text tool? It is
not on my system. I have MS Office Professional.
Thanks for any advice on this.

The "Change Text Direction" button on the Formatting toolbar changes
horizontal text to vertical text. This button is only available if
support for Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, or Korean
is enabled through Microsoft Office Language Settings.

Thanks a lot. Your advice did bring the various tool buttons into the
program.
But I think that it may not be possible to do what I want anyway. Now the
text does go down the page, but each letter is sideways.
What I want to do is to be able to write a word so that it reads normally
yet goes down the page, like this:
v
e
r
t
i
c
a
l

In Powerpoint, doing it this way gives me very poor control of the spacings
between the letters. They tend to be too spaced out. Is there some way to do
what I want and also have good control over the spacings?
Thanks for your help.

You can type the words, with a <return> between each letter. Then, to space
them, use the 'Line spacing' formatting tool. You may also want to use the
Paragraph center option to center the letters under one another.

This does not require the addition of languages, but does take some time. I
believe that this is the method recommended in the FAQ.

From the Drawing toolbar, click on the Text Box tool and draw a text
box. Type your text into the box, but press Shift+Enter after each
letter. Click on the edge of the text box to select it, and click on
Format | Alignment | Center. Resize the text box if necessary, and drag
it to the desired position.

Yes, with these simple workarounds and tools, I can now get the spacing as I
like it.
Thanks a lot, guys.

You can type the words, with a <return> between each letter.

Or Shift+Enter between letters and Enter between words so you can use
line-spacing to control distance between letters and paragraph spacing to
control distance between words.
