Vertical nav link bars

In vertical nav link bars, I know I can change the color of the text through
customizing the theme the style belongs to. However, I can't find a way
that works to change text color for hover etc. - I've tried wrapping styles
around the nav bar - doesn't work. Any help much appreciated.
