Some forwarded messages have one or more vertical lines on the left
side of the whole message.
Can this be removed?

no. The person forwarding them uses a formatting that adds a prefix - the
sender would need to set their mail client to not use a prefix on forwards.

Sure. Change the message format to "Plain Text". The line will disappear,
since plain text cannot, by definition, contain formatting. You might not
like what results, however.
