How can I insert a vertical line on the left side and the full height
of a paragraph of text ?

Any help appreciated.

You can apply a border to left side of the paragraph. In Word 2003 and
earlier versions: Select the paragraph(s) to which you want to apply the
border. Then select Format > Borders and Shading > Borders tab. In the
dialog, make sure that “Apply to†is set to Paragraph. Select the desired
border style, color and width, then click the left side of the Preview
drawing.

If you are going to use the left border frequently, you could create a
paragraph style with the left border applied.

In case of Word 2007, you will find the Borders and Shading dialog box here:
Home tab > Paragraph group > bottom-right icon in second row > click the
arrow and select Borders and Shading.
