Good morning!

I'm using Word XP.

I'm building a doc template and am working on custom headers and footers -
and I need to add a vertical line along the left margin. Is there a way to
build the vertical line in to the header or footer?

Yes. Switch to header&footer view, and insert the line as a Shape (with
the line tool under AutoShape in the Drawing-Toolbar). If the line is in
the document margin, it should stay clear of all text in the normal
bodytext layer.

Yes, use a drawing line anchored to the header.
