Veristas EXEC to Backup Domain Controller

L

Le Van Chi

Hi

I am an administtrator at one of many offices of my company.
At my office, I have one DC, it replicates with the DC server at head office
via leased line 128kps. My AD database has >10.000 users.

How should I backup DC at my office? Do I need to do that? or not need
because I can build up DC back by joining with the Headoffice DC? how long
does it take to replicate database for a new DC?

Or Can I backup my DC locally using Veritas Exec 9.0? If this, I need to
backup System state only? How do I restore?

I understand that these are basic knowledge, If you answer me then I can be
sure my understanding is correct.

Thank you very much!
Chi

Although you can rebuild a DC by running dcpromo and downloading directory
information from another DC this would take some time over a 128k link. You
should use Backup Exec to back up the system state data on your DC every
night.
This will be enough to restore the domain controller but if you have any
other user data on there this should be backed up as well.

In the event of you having to rebuild the DC, you should perform a
non-authoritative restore of AD with your system state backup and then allow
normal replication to get the backup up to date.
