verifying files

Several programs keep crashing in windows xp home. I wish to verify my
windows files before repairing or re-installing . How is this done?

Click Start--Run and type: sfc /scannow

why does sfc /scannow specify a winxppro/sp1 disk, yet seems to work with my
oem winxphome recovery disk?
