Weird. I can neither explain it nor duplicate it. I'd suggest trying to use Windows Explorer to view the desktop and maybe drag it to the Recycle Bin.

You might want to bring this up in one of the Windows groups, since it seems to be more than an Outlook issue. Mention your Windows version, of course.
