Owen Marshall
I have tried to install XP several times, with varying errors.
System has 1x512mb stick of memory, which I have ran through Memtest86+
several times -- it has gone for 25-26 hours with no errors.
The stops I get are 0x50 and 0x8E - I have found KB article 171003 that
describes the stop error.
The other problems I get are hangs on the "Detecting hardware" step as
soon as the computer reboots, and a warning that a file was not copied
correctly, but I whack retry and it works.
I had errors in NTFS.sys, but they disappeared when I switched the IDE
cable. That could have been a part of the problem, or a red herring, or
I don't know what...
For a comparison, trying to install Debian GNU/Linux eventually worked,
but gave me errors that should never happen.
I fear a bad RAM stick, but I don't have an alternate stick to test
with. Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
Owen
