Hello,
I was wondering if anyone can help me. I was just looking though my
root directory, when I went into the Wondows directory, and there are 32
files $NtServicePackUninstall$ through $NtUninstallQ828026$. What are these
files, and are they necessary. Any help would be appreciated.....Thanks, Bob

These files are used to uninstall service packs and hotfixes if necessary.
They're blue because they have been compressed. Windows XP uses blue
filenames to denote compressed files and folders.

Hi, If the computer is working properly these files and folders can safley
be deleted, they are no longer required by the system.

If you're confident that you won't need to uninstall either the
service pack or any of the subsequent hotfixes, you can safely delete
those folders. You can then open the Control Panel's Add/Remove
Programs applet and select each of the pertinent removal choices, in
turn. You should get an error message stating that the removal files
are missing, and asking if you'd like to delete the menu option.

By design, WinXP automatically compresses files that do not get used
frequently, and, if you've left the default settings intact, displays
those files in blue.

If you wish to change this behavior, in Windows Explorer, click
Tools > Folder Options > View > Advanced settings: Show encrypted or
compressed NTFS files in color.

Those are the folders of files that would be needed to uninstall those
hotfixes from Windows update. Blue because they are compressed as
unlikely to be used. Check the reference numbers against the
corresponding page - http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;828026
for that one, and if you decide you will not want to remove the fix you
can delete the folder
