Variant datatype in Excel 2003

I notice that running the same macro in 2003 returns
slightly different calculated numbers from when I run it
in 97. The user whose macro it is has been slapdash with
the datatypes (leaving all his variables undeclared as
variants). Have Microsoft changed how the variant
datatype behaves? (I get consistency when I rewrite the
macro declaring variables with the relevant datatypes.)
