Variable number of columns

Hello All

This is a continuation of a previous post, that was answered by Allen Browne
on 28 March, but as I've been away since then I fear the thread may have
'gone cold' (are you there Allen?)

I have a main report witha a subreport, both formatted for A4 paper. The
main
report is 198mm wide, with 6.1mm and 6.17mm left/right margins (the
minimums), so 185.73mm 'available'. The subreport is 86.51mm wide, with two
columns each 86.4mm wide and zero column spacing: the subreport again has
the 6.1mm and 6.17mm left/right margins. I make that (2 x 86.51mm) + 6.1mm +
6.17mm = 185.29mm 'needed' for the subreport: but the subreport only prints
in one column when
it's part of the main report (it prints in two columns when printed
independently).

Where am I going wrong?
Hope someone can help.

Many thanks
Leslie Isaacs

Multi-column subreports will print a single column if they are set to print
Down Then Across. You can force column wrapping if you limit the height of
the subreport control or set the layout to go Across Then Down.

Maybe there's some kind of rounding that is messing up the
width by a small amount??

Most likely, you have the column snaking set to Down then
Across, which will not work in a can grow subreport (because
the subreport does not know about pages). The first thing
to try is changing the snaking to Across then Down. If that
works, then at least you know you don't have to worry about
other, more subtle problems.

Hello Duane

Thanks for your reply.

I tried reducing the height of the subreport control on the main report, but
this made no difference.
I then tried amending the layout of the subreport to print the columns
Across Then Down, but although this did get it printing in two columns in
the main report it also caused the subreport to start each group on a new
page - even though the Force New Page and Force New Row/Column is set to
None !

Obviously I'm still going wrong somewhere, but cannot see where: hope you
can help!

Many thanks
Les

Shrinking the subreport would not have helped with the columns down then
across unless you set the Can Grow property to No.

I don't know why you are creating new pages. I expect it might have to do
with your main report properties and the Link Master Child properties of the
subreport control. We don't know anything about these on your report.
