Vanishing Email Messages

I have a user running Windows NT and Outlook XP who, after
opening his email messages from the INBOX, closes them and
has them disappear. They are no where to be found. If
he, however, moves the message to another folder before
opening it, he can close it and the message will remain.
What would cause this to happen?

Your user doesn't understand views and is using a view that hides read
messages. So have the user change to a view that shows all messages.
