Hi, I need help please with a problem im having

Bought a pc from a 3rd party, with xp pro already installed.
WIndows crashed, and I had another windows cd from my old pc and
re-installed after formatting, now it says, can not validate Xp..

I went to microsoft and gateway pcs, no luck apart from buying a new
one for 180 dollars :(

Can anyone advise me what to do?

and before any smart comments, it is a legal copy i have, and i also
have a toshiba laptop with its cd recovery, so I am all legal here.

and after i bought the pc for 300 dollars, dont want to spend 180 on a
cd!

Thank you to all the good people with help!

No your not legal, you cannot install an OEM OS that shipped with a Gateway
or Toshiba on a different computer, your option, as someone stated in a
reply to your first post, is to buy a new copy.

NJ,

If the computer was installed with XP but was not activated then most likely
the license they gave you was bogus. You should be presented with the option
to put a new license in. If you're license was for an OEM copy of windows
then it will need to match up to what is installed now. Otherwise I'd call
Microsoft and have them work it out with you. I'm not sure how they deal
with consumers but they should provide a number in that error screen. They
are very reasonable with business users.

Another option, as someone else stated, is Ubuntu Linux:

You can download it for free, or if you don't have broadband then you can
order the DVD from a number of sources for about $7-$10 or the CD for only
a few bucks. However if your bandwidth is low enough that you have to
order a disc, I suggest buying the DVD because it comes with a few
gigabytes of extra applications that you won't have to download later.

Just ask on alt.os.linux.ubuntu if you need more info or help on getting
or installing Ubuntu.

An OEM copy of XP cannot be moved from one computer to another. Once it has
been installed on a computer, it cannot be transferred unless it's sold with
the computer. You didn't state what the version of XP it was from your old
PC but implied it is a OEM version. If so it can't be used on another
system per the EULA which is now being enforced through activation.

You'll need to contact the seller and get the original XP CD for it - a
legit sale is supposed to include the OS CD, or buy a generic OEM copy of
XP. If you have a CD from a qualifying product such as win/95 (they can be
cheaply had on eBay) buy a retail upgrade of XP Home. That is
transferrable.

Then call MS and they will tell you how to validate over the phone for
free.
