Validation drop downs dont appear

Hi,

I am trying to add validation drop downs to a sheet in
XL2000, but the drop down arrow does not appear. I have
checked the relevant boxes and selected an appropriate
range of cells. The strange thing is that
the "Validation" function is working, as it will only
allow me to input values contained in the range that I
specified. The other strange thing is that there are
similar drop downs on other sheets in the workbook that
work just fine. Anyone got any ideas?

In the Data Validation dialog box Settings tab, have you set 'Allow:' to
'List'? And have you checked the box 'In-cell dropdown'?
 
Yes,

I have selected list and I have also selected the in-cell
dropdown box...that's what is so puzzling!
