validation data for drop down list

Hi - simple question. I am using Excel 2003 and trying to put the data I use ifor a drop down list (using Data | Validation) in another worksheet, but it won't let me do it. I used to be able to do this in older versions of Excel. Do I have some setting wrong?

You cant use cell references eg Sheet3!A1:A20, but if you name the range to
say Range1,
Data Validation will accept =Range1
