I have a copy of windows purchased by me. It has been activated. If I go to
the Microsoft update site, I am told I need to validate it. How can I do
this? Why do I need to validate as well as activate?

Next time buy a real version of XP, rather than using a pirate copy of
an XP key. You brought this niggle upon youself.

But I already have purchased a "Full Version" of Windows XP. I have it
running on my machine. Why do I need to purchase another?

So how do you know that I am using a pirate key? The copy of windows I have
is a full retail version.

If you bought a retail boxed version of XP then you have a genuine
Windows otherwise it is pirated.

I have come across people selling CDs in a box but the graphics on the
box is quite clearly suspect. In such situation, you can contact MS and
explain to them what has happened. They may look at your case
sympathetically and offer you a free genuine version for your own use.

It's possible that a newly purchased copy of XP may have it's
Product Key compromised. There is method of piracy, where
a KeyGen(erator) is used to try to create a valid code. Recently,
I worked with a customer who purchased XP pro. He was not
able to activate the copy. We spoke to Microsoft and they gave
him a replacement Product key to use.
Using a five-segment, 5 character code there are a lot of possible
valid combinations. I'm reasonably sure that MS maintains a
database of these compromised keys.

I am truly amazed.

Gentlemen,

You have to understand that MS needs to generate revenues for this year
as Vista is once again delayed. The only way to generate these revenues
to boost the stock price is to force perople to buy new retail versions
of XP. If you post anything to hinder this process then clearly it is
no surprise the messages are purged from the servers. MS is a
multi-billion dollar business and needs to be sustained by any means -
leagal or not.

I know all that already. I have now found out that I have an invalid product key.

Are you a thief then? Did you collude with the vendor to sell you a
pirated software? You could be done under "joint enterprise"
legislation!

I've never seen a counterfeit full retail version but it is possible. I have
seen a few counterfeit OEM copies that were very realistic. I have even
purchased them from a reputable distributor. They had purchased them from
what they thought was a genuine liquidator. They were shrink wrapped with
hologram CD's, valid looking coa's etc. As soon as they found out they
contacted me and all the counterfeit copies were replaced. I have also had
customers who have purchased counterfeit product that was very realistic
looking. In those cases Microsoft helped them to get legitimate copies at a
very low cost. If you believe your copy is legitimate contact Microsoft and
they will work with you.

People shouldn't need to do this to use the software they purchased.
This is a total outrage, and this latest notification crap is nothing
but spyware, down to the part where MS had to disguise it as a security
update.

Microsoft should be investigated for its spyware practices.

I'm not saying the software purchased by the OP is counterfeit but what if
it is? If you somehow come into possesion of counterfeit money you aren't
allowed to spend it or exchange it for real money. In all cases of
counterfeit Microsoft software that I've seen Microsoft has gone good for
replacing it.

As for your belief that validation is spyware - it is your right to have
your beliefs. I said nothing about that in my post so your reply is off
topic. I haven't made up my mind yet on Microsoft's current validation
update. Time and how many of the people complaining that turn out to have
counterfeit or pirate software will help me to make up my mind. For the
present time I'm sitting on the fence.

Have you installed it on your computer?

After all this time with this anti-consumer technology getting worse and
worse, and using deceptive conjob fake critical updates to get people to
install it, and you're still sitting on the fence?

Copy-protection doesn't do anything to stop real pirates. Only paying
customers really have to deal with its problems.

Do you think that disguising this new WGA Notification crap as a
critical update is ethical?

As I said I haven't made up my mind yet. I have had a program I have
developed ripped off before. I have had magazine articles I have written
ripped off. I think the owners of a product have a right to protect
themselves. I haven't decided yet if Microsoft has gone too far in doing so.
They are very close to the line either way.

Proving that one has a legit copy of Windows once is enough. Four times
with more down the pike is bullying.

Well, at least we can see each other.

Perhaps we should start a club. One thing's for sure, there may be no
Cabal, but this is the next best thing. ;)
