V Lookup

I have a workbook that I am trying to use a V- Lookup and all Excel returns
in the cell is the formula, no results. The formula is:
=VLOOKUP(E2,'Provider-Dept'!$A2:$B53,2,FALSE). I have my array table sorted
ascending - 1st column. Any ideas why Excel will only return the formula, not
the result?

The main table has the following columns:
A1 B1 C1 D1 E1
F1
Pt Last Name Pt First Name CLINIC# Gender Provider Dept.

My table array contains column headings and data:
A1 B1
Provider Dept.

ACM MONT
AMZ NCE3
AVB NCW2
BCB S5AM
BEE SEUR
BG CHN1

Hi Sue,

Format the cell with the formula as General and re-enter the formula (F2, ENTER)

The cell was formatted as text before you entered the formula
